Mmoss offers a modern take on late 60s British psych

They're not from late '60s London, Mmoss are actually from modern-day New Hampshire. Not that you'd notice after a listen to the band's album, simply titled i.

It's rooted in that late 60s era, think UFO club, think Notting Hill squats, think acid folk, early Krautrock, think…well, you get the idea.

Anyway, rather than me babbling, let me tell you this…you cans stream the album online for free and if you want to buy the download, you can for $4.20. Alternatively, the band, knowing its audience, has also run off 300 copies on 150g vinyl for $14. They even do a cassette. Why? Who knows. Anyway, check it out, it's pretty decent.

New music: The Red Suns - Give Me Gold

 

Re-living the 1980s socially and politically is perhaps not a great thing. But at least it's a good excuse for some 'dark' northern bands to crawl out from the misery. Like The Red Suns.

There's definitely a touch of Echo and the Bunnymen and Joy Division in Give Me Gold, not to mention a bit of quality. They're on Deltasonic, which is always a good sign.

The Beginning bring psych pop into the modern era

When I read somewhere that a band is recommended for fans of The Rain Parade, I'm all over it. Saying that, the material I've heard from The Beginning doesn't really sound like them. It's very good though.

The band is the brainchild of Anders Ljunggren, a modern-day Swede, but a man with an obvious love of British psychedelic pop, as well as some old school indie. Probably more the former than the latter though. Check out the band's MySpace page for an idea of what I mean.

A new album is just out, going by the name of In Everything (pictured above), released via Uptown Hitsters. Possibly a review to follow, but on the evidence of those online tracks, it sounds like an album worth a punt if you're a fan of those reference points.

Ok, the image might show a band who have been playing in the dressing up box a bit too long (only joking lads), but the sound of The Sunbirds is something special.

Think of it as a modern twist of west coast 60s psychedelia - laid back vocals and guitars with a jangle, the kind of thing that's perfect for a lazy summer's day. Or night.
